A book review: Never Leave the Dogs Behind: A Memoir
by Brianna Madia

Mental Health and Emotional Depth
What moments or passages stood out to you the most, and why?
This book explores how the internet significantly influences our self-perception and the weight we give to comments from strangers. Brianna discusses her rise to fame, which skyrocketed and then quickly fell due to an incident that many people misunderstood; few knew the truth about what was happening in her real life. I appreciate that the author addresses this issue, as it's something young adults often encounter when they embark on their social media journeys. Life can become entangled with online reality versus genuine reality. It's crucial to understand that just because someone shares parts of their life online, it doesn’t mean others know their entire story. Therefore, why should we allow strangers to dictate how we feel about ourselves and our lives?
How did the author’s writing style or voice influence your connection to the story?
Brianna, the author, uses a raw writing style that keeps the narrative engaging and prevents it from dragging. Her words flow just right, without any unnecessary filler. I appreciate a book where the writer tells their story in a conversational manner, sharing their journey through their own perspective. It feels like sitting down with Brianna as she shares her experiences with a friend.
In what ways did the emotional journey of the main character(s) resonate with you?
Brianna reflects on mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, isolation, and the pressure of making deeply personal decisions under public scrutiny. While I haven't experienced making decisions in a public setting, I have seen many teens discuss how their choices and actions have affected them in the long term.
It's as if their teenage decisions are immortalized, leaving no room for mistakes, all while expressing themselves during a time that can feel daunting, overwhelming, and frightening. She steps away from social media to begin living life on her own terms. Through experiences of heartbreak, betrayal, and the harsh realities of life in the desert, she learns to redefine strength, reclaim her autonomy, and navigate life independently.
Who would you recommend this book to, and why?
If you’re looking for a book about a recent situation that highlights the incredible work of man's best friend—dogs—this is the perfect read for you. It tells a heartfelt story about how dogs provide comfort during tough times, encourage present-mindedness, and help us appreciate the small joys in life, like the afternoon breeze or the stillness of the Arizona heat.
The narrative follows a woman in her thirties who makes a dramatic shift into a lifestyle she previously knew nothing about, as she wasn't into camping before. She takes the leap simply because she thinks, "Why not?" Ultimately, it's your life, and you have the power to create whatever you want from it, regardless of what others may say.
I used Libby via my local library to listen to the book via audio. If you haven't already, go get a library card! you'll be able to download an app called Libby and you'll have the oppurtunity to check out audio books. (up to 10 at time)
