Your Exit Plan: A Path Out of Burnout for Social Workers & Therapists
Burned Out, Underpaid, and Over It?
You’re not alone—and there is a way out (that doesn’t mean giving up your career entirely).

If you’ve found your way to this page, there’s a good chance you’re exhausted.
Not just tired—emotionally drained, frustrated, and quietly wondering if choosing this field was a mistake.

Maybe you’re burnt out from high caseloads, thankless hours, trauma after trauma.
Maybe you love the work but can’t stand the low pay, broken systems, or lack of balance anymore.
Or maybe, like I was, you’re simply asking:
“Is this really what I want the rest of my career to look like?”
I’ve been exactly where you are.
Back in 2017, I was running a 24-hour emergency services program, managing over 20 staff members, including mental health counselors, recovery coaches, and addiction specialists. We worked in direct partnership with the police department, so that meant middle-of-the-night calls, on-the-ground response, and dealing with people in the most vulnerable, traumatic moments of their lives—suicide attempts, active crises, and the aftermath of unimaginable loss.

It was meaningful work. But it was also relentless.

Despite all the talk of “self-care,” the reality was simple:
There was no space to breathe.
The days blurred together. The nights didn’t feel like rest. The emotional toll grew heavier, the pay didn’t match the responsibility, and I knew I couldn’t keep going.

That’s when I decided to try something different.
The Shift That Changed Everything
A friend in project management helped me take stock of my existing skills. Together, we mapped out a path based not on “starting over,” but on translating my social work experience into a more sustainable, better-paid field.

Today, I work in the healthcare data sector—specifically in healthcare quality and analytics. I didn’t go back to school for another degree. I made small, strategic pivots, added a certification, and reframed my experience for a different industry. I've been in the field now since 2017 and I am still working in healthcare while I own my private practice because I love social work (just maybe not all the parts of it).
Here's my Linkedin- Click Here . I share this information with you so that you know I'm a prime example of a regular ole' social worker that made the switch.

It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

And guess what? I still do mental health work—but on my own terms. I take a few clients. I offer bariatric and cosmetic psychological evaluations. But I’m no longer drowning in crisis work. I have options, peace of mind, and a paycheck that reflects my expertise.
